WBA Preseason Predictions

Overview: In my mind the top three teams in this division are in a league by themselves. Oregon is the champs until someone proves otherwise and Colorado and Nebraska are proven franchises with great coaching and solid records of past performance. The next 3 teams are all up and coming with tons of talent also. With proper coaching any of them could sneak into the top 3 spots in here. Alaska also has their best team ever, but too bad that isn't saying much.

Team by Team Analysis

Oregon--We all know just how dangerous Oregon can be. They did exactly what everyone feared when they surrounded Lou Gonzales with two very strong rebounding forwards in Cory Mosley and Donovan Jones. What's even worse is that they are able to keep them all around for a while. The team is also a deadly accurate shooting team led by Gonzales at nearly 75% accuracy! The team also has standout PG Bishop Stein who has played exceptionally well for the team in the past couple of seasons. Perhaps the one weakness is their lack of a real SG threat. It sounds as though Wu Dian-Fan will be moved to SG to fill the void, but until the season starts we will all just have to wonder if he'll be good enough in that role to bring another title to Oregon.

Nebraska--This team constantly seems to make minor adjustments every year to try and find an identity for itself. Now they have the sensational rookie at PG, the hometown kid at SG, the fan favorite at SF, the hometown college hero at PF, and the down and dirty power guy at C. The team always relies on superstar Wayne Taylor to give them the boost they need down the stretch. Now they have also started to become trusting in Roy Base to take the big shots. This year they will also take a big risk by moving Brandon Morfeld to the SG position as a starter for the first time in his career. He has struggled thus far in the WBA so they need a vast improvement from him. Then of course they have #1 draft pick Jervan Timmons at PG. He's one of the best passers to come into the WBA in a while and he's so good around the ball defensively. Look out WBA.

Colorado--This team is always about "team" effort. Every season Colorado manages to be in the leagues elite without ever needing a standout star to carry the load. This is the main reason for their amazing consistency over the years. They just replace parts, and avoid rebuilding. Their best player is their talented PF Greg Lacy. He's a premier defensive presence who is also very capable of putting the ball in the hoop. They also have an amazing scorer in Samir Sheth who can drive the lane as well as any SG in the WBA. Their biggest acquisition is the signing of rookie Mark Carr. Carr is a guy that is ready to step into the league and start immediately. I have little doubt he will end up as rookie of the year if they play him enough. The question becomes whether or not Sheth is traded or moved to SF. Colorado also signed up Arnold Eaton at C who is another top notch defender. Colorado is a team that will outwork you, not outscore you.

Sacramento--This team is very intriguing to me. I always like what I see on paper from them, but they never seem to find the right team chemistry to get the job done. They have one of the leagues elite offensive talents in SF Jaxon McCall who has done everything he can for this squad. Then they added the services of a young C named John Van Horne who has the potential to dominate at this level. This offseason they also added John Davis to the mix which should give them a very strong and determined frontcourt duo. Then they have Jimmy Foster who is a very solid PG player and at SG they have hot tempered Harold Gil who is capable of some big games. This team can play with anyone, but I think their depth and inability to gel will once again cost them this year.

Salt Lake City--This team is loaded with talent and should easily be able to contend with anyone in the WBA, but of course we all know their coaching nightmare that these players must endure. They have a talented PG in Austyn Williams and their backcourt is completed by up and coming Evelio Jackson who is maturing fast and is becoming quite a solid SG. Their frontcourt is comprised of an amazing defensive duo in Wally Birkhead and Cordell Parks and of course the infamous Brad Bangerter. This team has all the talent that they need to get the job done and maybe someday their coaching will be up to the challenge.

Omaha--A lot of people are picking this team as the big surprise team of the season, ranking them as high as 2nd in the division, but I still see them as a team without a true superstar. They drafted Davion Stahl to play the point which is a very solid selection, but he will need some time to adjust to the WBA speed of the game and they may even need to find another player to give him time to mature. Of course this other player will be Oliver McCarty who I think is one of the most overpaid players in the entire WBA. He's a solid player, but he's no franchise player. MY guess is that he will end up being cut before that contract is up. Or traded if they can find anyone willing to take him. I do like their duo of Ramiro Watts and Berger up front. Berger is a premier defensive player and is able to score when needed and Watts is the real deal and only getting better. I think this team will still be hurt by the fact that they don't have a premier scorer and a household WBA name.

Alaska--If their was ever a year for Robert NOT to get last place in a division this may be it, but I won't be the person to predict that. He did sign Chuck Henderson who is easily the best player he has ever had and he still has Jack Spiegel who could break out any season. Spiegel has underachieved so badly, but if they can get a solid effort from him then that shores up the 1 and 5 spots for this team. He also likes to brag about Applegate who is definitely a solid player and I really like Marquez Houston for him. I think thaqt will be a very solid player for him for a long time.

Interview with the Legend

GSPN correspondent and former Washington Monument, Carolina Storm, and Colorado Pioneer, Kevon Duke recently sat down in an interview with the new owner/gm/coach of the Charlotte Crusaders, Sam Plummer. Kevon Duke was drafted by Plummer and played his rookie year with him before being traded to Colorado in the Boom-Boom Casey blockbuster.

KD: Welcome back coach! How does it feel to be back in the WBA?

SP: Thanks Kevon! I am glad to be back in the WBA. After being gone for a year, I began to realize just how much I missed the league. At first, I liked to tell myself that it wasn't that hard being away. But then when I saw a Monuments game on television and saw how poorly they were playing, I just wanted to go to the game and give advice. I was getting that itch to coach again. I missed the players and fans. I missed the comraderie with the other coaches in the league. I notified Rondall towards the end of the season that I wanted to get back in. Just as the season ended, he let me know that there was an opening in the Carolina franchise. I wanted to jump at the opportunity. I have many friends in the area and knew it would be a great place for me to coach.

KD: Did you think at all of ever taking the team to Washington since they moved to Arkansas?

SP: It crossed my mind. In fact, I was very close to moving. But I wanted a fresh start. I wanted the challenge of taking this franchise from the bottom to the top so the fans here who have been so loyal can see a winner which they haven't seen since Season 2. I always had tremendous respect for this franchise especially while Dennis Evans was in charge. He always gave my Washington teams problems.

KD: How do you think your team will fare this season?

SP: Our goal is to win the championship THIS year. I don't care that this team has had bad history. This is a different team. We have a lot to be excited about this year. I keep reminding my guys about Fernie in Season 1. We have a lot of similarities with that team. The fans will tell you that this is the most talented team that they have ever had. We have a pretty good starting 5 and a very deep team.

KD: Who do you project to be in your starting 5?

SP: At center, we will probably start Jim Peyton, but Keyon Brown could earn the starting nod if he plays well in the preseason. At power forward, we will start Anthony Curtis who is the BEST player in the league that no one knows about. Anthony is really excited about the new season and has told me that he will be an all-star this year. With his talent, I don't see why he can't. At small forward, we will start Derek Vinyard who played so many years in Gabon. Some around the league feel that he might have lost a step, but we feel he can still play at a high level. If he does struggle by change, we also signed Abullah Chanda who is well-respected around the league for his unselfish play. At shooting guard, we will start former Monument Eugene LaMaitre. We feel we have one of the top guards in the league in Eugene. He has really turned into an all-star caliber player. At point guard, I am leaning towards starting another former Monument in Drake Bacheman. Drake does all of the little things that a coach likes. Alvin Simpson could also start, but right now we envision him as the backup.

KD: So, what can we expect from your team?

SP: We will play hard and will play a style that is not as physical as what my old Washington teams used to play. We will rely more on shots from the floor and just smart all-around play. Our guys are aiming for 50 wins. We really feel like we can do this. Then, come time for the playoffs, anything can happen. I think we will surprise a lot of people this year.

KD: If you couldn't pick your own team, who do you think will be in the WBA Championship?

SP: You have your Oregons and Cancuns who are always dangerous, but the team that really intrigues me this year is Capetown. They could make some serious noise this year. In the East, I like Rochester. They have a lot of weapons.

KD: Who do you think is the most underrated team in the league other than Charlotte?

SP: Budapest always surprises, but I think I would have to say Sacramento. I like what they've done with their team. Adding Jimmy Foster and John Davis were nice pick ups.

KD: Who was your favorite player to coach in Washington?

SP: I liked all of my players even you Kevon. I'll always remember the guys from Season 4 who won the championship. Boom-Boom turned around that franchise. Arron Black was a great shooter. Parker Mason was and still is the best all-around player I have been around.

KD: Who is your favorite owner in the league?

SP: I have always been a fan of Brandon. He knows what he is doing, but I am still surprised that he has never won a championship.

KD: What do you think of Robert's team this year?

SP: Oh, you had to bring up Robert. What a guy! I actually like his team this year. He has some talent. Bringing in Chuck Henderson was huge. I think they might compete for a playoff spot if things go their way. It will be close though. He needs to be smart.

KD: Is there anything else you'd like to say before we wrap it up?

SP: Any chance of you wanting to come back and play for your old coach?

KD: Coach, you know my knees wouldn't hold up. If the money's right, you never know....

SP: You were always about the money. That's why I traded you to Colorado, ha ha.

KD: Maybe Marc will sign me.

KD: Well coach, it's been fun. Good luck with the new season.

SP: Thanks Kevon. Let me know what Marc says.

Overview: There are a couple teams in this division that have a real shot at winning the title. Both Paris and Albacete are very strong teams with a lot of depth to go along with their talented starters. Andorra is a team fast on the rise that will be ready to pounce should either or both of those teams stumble and Budapest is always in the hunt with their solid fundamentals. Gabon has talent as they always do and Frankfurt and London continue to rebuild.

Team by Team Analysis

Paris--This team has a ton of talent and they were showing that in the Western Conference last year. With Jay Vasquezas the mainstay in the paint they probably have the most dominating player in the Eastern Conference right now which is why I pick them to win the division. Not only that, but they also have a big time forward in Heiko Van Brandt. Van Brandt is capable of grabbing a ton of boards and doing the dirty work. He's a consistent and productive player that can always be counted on in the clutch. Then there is Scott Lio who is a rising star in the league. He just keeps getting better and better every year. They also have a talented bench which includes Al Lee and Lou Boone. This makes their frontcourt as a team one of the best there is and makes this team a major player in the championship hunt.

Albacete--Albacete is a team that is always looking to win a championship and this season is no different. To me their biggest win this offseason was landing a prime time talent in Tony Dimateo. I believe he was the best free agent out there and he will be a huge addition to this squad. Harry Jarvis still has a small spring in his step and Juwan Bixby is developing very fast. You also can't forget about Tyler Kane at PG who gets the ball distributed and youngster Walter Walter who was extended this offseason. If his young guys play as expected I see no reason that he shouldn't have a great season. In the end though I see his youth as the main reason to pick Paris ahead in this tight race.

Gabon--So much talent here and they can just never seem to get things rolling. Gabon probably has as long a history as Boston in terms of always searching for that missing piece. I think that they may have finally found it in Jim Wilson. Wilson is a very talented Center who gets a lot of boards and he will be a perfect compliment to an amazing player in Jerry Bramson. Bramson is a special kind of player who can do everything for a team and he leaves it all out there on the court. He is a silent performer in terms of hype in the WBA, but everyone knows who he is. In fact several seasons ago he was always mentioned in the MVP voting. As Gabon has trailed off so has he, but I think this may be the year they bounce back. If not, then Gabon may need to look for a new angle. The team also made sure to re-sign fan favorite Otto Hameleers who is a big time defensive talent for this team. It will be very important to see how this team performs this season.

Andorra--Here's a team that has all the tools they need to be really really good this year. They have Devonta Corrigan at forward who is one of the best players in the league. He rebounds and is a solid shooter. He's just the kind of bigtime player that any team should build around. Andorra also has Oshodi Bombata who has been a real force for this team as he has developed over the past few seasons and of course, who could forget Mark Miller. He's one of the top defenders in the entire WBA and gives this team an identity defensively. Tristen Collins and young star Al Herbert are two more players that will make Andorra a fun team to watch this season. Depth may be a concern for them though, so if any injuries occur it may be a long year here.

Budapest--Every year this team burns me on my predictions cuz they are so consistent and play such a great team oriented style of ball that I placed them up a spot just in case this year. Budapest was hurt this year by the retirement of All-Star Steve Peterson which meant that this team was looking for a new leader on the floor. The answer to all their problems ended up being veteran Horace Colbert who they nabbed in free agency this year. Not only did they sign a dominating big man, but they also managed to sneak away with Bob Delaney who is probably one of the most under rated players in the WBA because of where he has played the past few seasons. Beyond those two they are quite thin though with Roy Cader being a go to guy and Matthew Gill being a major contributor. This team will struggle with rebounding I think and it will cause the team to struggle.

Frankfurt--This team is on the rise, but they are still a little bit behind the rest of the teams above. They did a great job holding onto Yuri Vilasny who I think is a very good point guard that can get the ball anywhere, but they still don't have a premier scorer around him. Remi Jeay is making a comeback here and he will be a great asset for this team in the scoring department and brings an overall improved level of play to the squad. The team also signed up Branko Filipovic who is an amazing young player that continues to become better every year. I think he will really break out this year. This duo gives Frankfurt an absolutely amazing backcourt for a long time into the future. Their weakness now is the frontcourt where they have gaping holes to fill. If they can make some moves and get a big man or two then this team can be very good.

London--Wow, this team is bad. Sorry David, but I barely even see an inkling of hope here as this franchise continues to slide backwards. George Faup was a very nice pick as late as they got him, but he won't be ready for the WBA right away and in fact it may be a few seasons before he has a real shot to contribute as a Center. They also signed Sergei Danilov who was a very sought after free agent himself. Not sure exactly why he is being paid what he is, but he is a solid player with a bright future for sure. Chance Crowley and Garvin Wright will also be contributors, but again it looks to me like it may be a few seasons before they can be really productive.

He should provide support for Jim McCarthy who is getting to the late years of his career. A. J. will work his way into an experienced frontcourt that includes three position man Jimmy Sims. Rochester will be hard pressed to hold off Brooklyn but may have done enough to get the job done. The backcourt of Whalen and Williams will need to care the early load as the new look frontcourt learn to share minutes and play with A.J as part of the mix.

Overview: No rookies for the Rage. They have a talented squad that can produce. If Rochester makes a wrong step, then Brooklyn is right there. Always a threat to be a good team the Rage need to kick it up a notch this season and a new division and new rivals may just inspire them to play to the level they are capable of. A solid starting 5 will be counted on to carry the load. Be interesting to see if this team is the same one we see at the end in a divison that figures to be close. Could the Rage look for a trade to get that extra push? It's a possibility. But they may not need to, this team is good, just up to them how good.

Overview: Toronto Dinos in just one season have changed its entire roster since their ownership change. If anyone doubted who's team this is it is no longer an issue. This is Walt Jackson's team, he will have some scoring help now with Emmett Yee but both have had health issues and that could spell doom for the Dinos. Hill is the younger replacement of Christobal Dasher and although he can rebound as good if not better his scoring or lack of scoring could be an issue. Dinos are a much better bet next year than this year but have talent to suprise if all the stars fall in line for them. Young and talented though with a bright future. Move East will help them too.

BOSTON MASSACRE

Overview: Boston along with Rochester are the only teams that played in the Atlantic last season. The Boston Massacre has done little to improve its fate from a 26 win season a year ago. Not to say they have done nothing but in comparison to some teams in the divison it looks like it. Luca McMillan may be the bright spot in an otherwise dim year for Boston. The Massacre just seem to be a team that on paper looks good but seem to not live up to it on the floor. If they do not change their path they may have a hard go for years to come in this division. Why do you dish out money on extension for players on a team that won 26 games? Boston would have been better served to use the extra bucks on some free agent help. Hainge and company have the faith of ownership but it may be blind faith.

LONG ISLAND MAYHEM

Overview: Could this be the year Espo's crew get it done? Playoffs? It is Montana, still maybe the move to Long Island will change the franchise fortune. A horrible start last season was to much to come back from in the tough west. But this is the east now. If and we stress IF, Long Island stays committed and does not push the panic button they could be very good. They should be a playoff team. But this franchise has had a well known history of lack of patience. So who knows but if these are the 14 guys that finish the season on this squad first we will be in a state of shock, second they should be in the playoffs.

Overview: Hope. New York has it as new management is in place and the whole WBA fears what might be in New York. But trust us there is no reason to fear the only team named after a womens basketball team. Thats why you see the list of players not returning so high cause they played like a bunch of girls. Much like Toronto was last year in Roswell so is New York this year. But as Toronto has shown it is possible to turn over a bad roster in a hurry. With the respect bordering on fear that some in the league have for the new management no doubt New York will improve but not enough to avoid a trip to the draft lottery in Sacramento at WBA Headquarters.

Overview: Cap trouble in the offseason has worried some about Baltimore and the place they hold in this divison. They are a team that really will be hard to figure. Where ever you decide to place Baltimore do it in led not ink. The could finish anywhere from 1st to 5th and may not even make the playoffs or could have home court. We honestly don't have a good read on Baltimore but if any team is going to under achieve this is the safest bet in this divison. Overview: This division is wide open. Any of the top 5 teams could end up winning this thing so my projection is very open for discussion in this division. I don't expect too many games to separate any of them from one another. Baltimore and New York are still building and are both going to be capable teams, but just not quite where the others are yet. Maybe Marc will have a few old tricks up his sleeve.

Rochester--Dave has put together probably his best team in recent years. They will rely on the veteran leadership of SG Dave Williams and C Jim McCarthy. Both are aging, but can still accomplish great things on the floor. Couple that with the yearly growth in the abilities of Jimmy Whalen at the PG spot and the veteran floor vision of a guy like AJ Schulz and you're fielding a court of All-Star caliber talent. I think this veteran mentality is what will drive Rochester to the top of the division and what makes them the team to beat. Kurt Beck will also be a welcome addition as a back-up in the frontcourt and Leon Berthelson will be a great asset to have in the instance Whalen stumbles.

Toronto--This team is still pretty youth minded and they are just starting to dig themselves out of the franchise hole. They have a great start with a player like Walt Jackson. Jackson is a game breaker and he's a big time force that this team can build around. Every team needs a go to guy and that is Jackson. With their focal point intact, they proceeded to make a major acquisition of Emmett Yee and Justin Krueger. This was huge as it shored up two starting positions for this team. If this team accomplishes what I believe it can this year then this may be the guy to vote for as GM of the Year! He also went out and snatched up Simeon Hill to be his C for a long time. It's a risky move, but if he can send Hill to a few shooting camps he will have a big time WBA Center in a few seasons.

Brooklyn--It's so hard to pick against Brooklyn because they are such a consistent team and they always seem to find a way to put the big wins together. They are another pretty young team with a very patient owner that is just looking to ride these young guys until they mature. Shane Strom is their obvious All-Star go to guy, but he is supported by youngster Mario Bailey who gets better and better every season along with the young phenom Jarius Miles who is still growing into his abilities. Then of course no one can forget the anchor of the team Joe Siebert. You'll be hard pressed to find a more gritty player than Joe who brings a solid work ethic to the team and is constantly an example of excellence for these young players.

Boston--Boston has made some major changes to their lineup this past season, but their one constant is Dave Short. It would have bee a shame had they allowed him to leave town along with Bill Yeager, but it looks like Short will work in Boston for good now. Last season they also acquired former All-Star John Greene who they re-signed for this season. Greene has struggled with health issues that have plagued his game, but Boston seems to be getting quality from him. They are also waiting on Ajani Valentine to mature and become the player they see in the old GCBA tapes. Ajani is an excellent talent and soon he will be a viable weapon for this squad. Lastly they also have Danny Hainge who has really exploded onto the scene in the WBA. He gets All-Star consideration every yearand is a very consistent player. As they do every year Boston tried to draft a premier PG, but once again they will end up with a talented, but not premier guy. Projects are fine, but they need a real PG in order to compete.

Long Island--I love this teams talent level. But my problem is that I say that every year and every year they disappoint me so I projected them as the last team in the hunt here because of history. Espo is a solid coach, but for some reason he just can't ever get it all together. Pat Stephenson and Tom Perkins make a very formidable frontcourt duo and Tyriq Lang and Sheldon Gorman the youngsters are right there knocking on the door for playing time. Their backcourt consists of Kadeem Reed and Paul Carroll who both have great abilities they bring to the table. Not to mention that rookie Brenden Dawson may have rookie of the year potential for these guys right out of the gate. This team has the potential to win the division, but the past must be learned from.

Baltimore--I like Robby and what he is doing here which is bringing some consitency to the franchise. He runs the team well and I have total respect for him as a GM and a coach. His best player is by far PG Anson Valente who really gives this team a genuine flow on the court. The problem is that Baltimore needs to find a pure scorer that he can get the ball to. Mike Ivey and Don Laine are also very integral parts of the team and newly acquired Jay Dickinson will be much welcomed. I think this team will still struggle though until they get a real bona fide All-Star on their team to give them an identity. Solid group of guys, but not enough overall talent.

New York--I have no doubt that Marc will be the most productive owner this franchise ever had, but this will be the REAL test of his abilities. His best player is probably Jevon Carter who is a solid scorer, but isn't going to scare anyone else away by himself. He also has two solid PG's in assists leader Keith Douglas and John Gaiser. Perhaps one of them will be moved in favor of shoring up other weaknesses or one of them may play SG. He also acquired Tom Kinsey right at the end of free agency. New York will need a lot more talent to move past Baltimore, but I doubt Marc will take too long to make some waves.

Omaha Wild # 3 Pick

As a high school sophomore at Omaha Central, Davion Stahl got a huge surprise when the Adelaide Aces moved to Omaha, Nebraska. He instantly became a fan of this team. Throughout all of the just missing of the playoffs the Wild is still his favorite team. The hometown boy had a choice to choose from either staying home at Great Plains University or going to Mid-Atlantic University. He decided to stay home in Omaha where he had a great career leading Great Plains University to the GCBA tournament in his last two years. His senior season Stahl was named caption of the team leading them to the final game, only to run out of gas losing by 15 points. He received the honor of being named the GCBA Player of the Year. Now graduating with a Bachelor degree in Information System the only thing left to do is to try his skills in the WBA. With the Wild having the first pick in the draft it was a sure thing that he was going to stay at home and play his professional career in Omaha. Right before the draft the Wild management decided that they needed more help in this draft and traded down to the 3rd pick in season 11 draft.

Scoop Baxter: What were your feelings when the Wild moved down in the draft?

Davion Stahl: I was really upset. I really wanted to stay at home and play for my favorite team the Wild.

Scoop: When did you know that you were going to be a member of the Wild?

Stahl: Going into the draft I didn't know where I was going. Until Colorado picked Carr then I knew my dream had come true.

Scoop: With Oliver McCarty already establish as the Wild starting Point Guard what did management explain was your role with the team?

Stahl: They explained that my role would be at the beginning of the season was to come off the bench and replace O Mac. Hopefully by mid-season I can contribute with about 20 minutes if not more per game.

Scoop: In high school who was your favorite player in the WBA?

Stahl: Well, My favorite player is of course Parker Mason he just does everything for his team and has the rings to show. But I am kind of a homer, so I always liked John Felton and Ellis Law for the Wild. They both did what it took to get their team over the hump.

Scoop: What do you think about the rest of your draft class for the Wild?

Stahl: WOW!!!! Scott Berger, I am just looking forward to playing with him. Anybody who can shoot the ball like he can just makes my job a lot easier. Raheem Qualls just finds ways to put the ball in the hole. But for a big man he can also pass the rock. I hope we can stay together for many seasons to come and begin a championship home.

Scoop: Who are you most looking forward to play with?

Stahl: Hmmm. Probably Gerhold Verholm. He can do it all the most important thing is he is a better rebounder than what is shown. I understand he went to a special shooting camp so he can play and shoot better.

Scoop: Who do you think is the best all-time WBA player that graduated from Great Plains University?

Stahl: Playing now in the WBA? It is probably Donovan Jones of Oregon. I think the best player ever to come out of Great Plains University is Nash Badgers. For what ever the reason was he just didn't adapt to the WBA style of play.

Scoop: What is your outlook on the upcoming season?

Stahl: I think we have a pretty good chance of being really competitive in our division. Some of the best teams are here the champs Oregon, Colorado, and Nebraska just to name a few. But if the “wild bunch” the Omaha bench can give a lot of help to a very good starting line up we can definitely wins some games.

Scoop: Any last words?

Stahl: Yes, thank you Coach Kelley for keeping at home. Thanks to all the fans in the Omaha Wild Kingdom for helping keep this team around so I can hopefully help to lead this team to the playoffs and beyond

The New Franchise

Arkansas Stingers

One of the newest teams this season is the Arkansas Stingers who before were known as the great Washington Monuments. Owner Stevie Blackwell stated that he and management decided to move the team because since the whole team was going to be rebuilt, he felt they should start fresh in every aspect including where they were going to play next season. "I loved Washington don't get me wrong, but seeing as how most of what Washington was is gone, I just felt that we needed to start something new somewhere else," Blackwell said.

The Arkansas Stingers have totally remodeled the team from last season. Such names that were seen leaving were Emmett Yee, Justin Krueger, A.J. Schulz, T.J. McFarland, and Quade Nash. On the other hand the team got players they feel can be great assets to their newly rebuilt franchise. Such players included Bill Andrews, Paul Wilson, Buck Jones, and Cristobal Dasher.

Tim Richards had this to say about all the players leaving and coming. "I like the guys who are coming to play for this franchise next season. I feel they can contribute well individually, but as a team can do great things. I hate to see the players that had to go leave. I mean it's sad to see these individuals go to different franchises, but last season we had a goal in mind and we said if we didn't reach it something had to be done. I'm looking forward to this next season with the newly constructed team and hope good things can happen with it."

The Stingers also added 6 new players from the rookie draft which are DaRond Lyons, Norm Kohn, Tyrell Clay, Ryan Swick, Rudy Wilson, and Bruce Banks. "I thought we had selected some good rookies in this draft. We felt they had something that could help fill in any cracks this team might have," stated Richards.

Arkansas is also seeing some faces from last season. Elvin Sanders who looks like he'll finally be getting a starting role since Emmett Yee is gone. Samson Erickson will still be a back-up, but is expected to play more. Of course returning like he has to this franchise for the past seven seasons, Boom-Boom Casey will again be the big man in the middle. This year though they are looking for him to try to take it up another notch despite how old he is getting.

This fresh franchise is also seeing a change in what division and conference they will be playing in. They have moved from the Mid-Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference to the Southern Division in the Western Conference. This will be a big change for Arkansas as they will face some of the better teams more times. Hopefully this won't be that big of a problem for Arkansas.

As far as the starting line-up goes, Coach Richards was quick to announce that he really had no idea exactly what it will look like. They will just go day to day and have to see which line-up works best in the pre-season, but until then it is pretty much a toss-up. He did happen to mention though that he figured Boom-Boom Casey and Cristobal Dasher would be the down low duo for the next season.

Interview with Scott Lio.

After moving to Paris, the ex-Texas Juggers, now known as Paris Sledgehammers, have made a big move during FA by signing Scott Lio to a surprising 36 m$ contract for the next 6 seasons. This looks like the only big name coming to Paris this year, so I have decided to interview him:

CL: Welcome to Paris, Mr Lio. Everything okay so far?

SL: Fine, thanks, fine.

CL: First of all I want to ask, why Paris? Many insiders thought you were going to try to stay at Capetown where you have a big season and quite a lot of future…

SL: You must be kidding me! You don't know anything about me? When nobody wanted me Coach Follana picked me up as a JUCO player for Paris Universite, and won the title on season 7. Then on the draft for season 8 he picked me up 15th overall! And when he traded me it was not to a crap team but to Cancun!!

CL: Wow, you worked quite a lot with him, why do you think he traded you 3 years ago, to offer you such a contract during FA?

SL: He had told me that he thought I was a little bit raw for the WBA when I came in, now I have picked up quite a lot of experience and I am ready to play for Paris.

CL: He told you that?

SL: Coach Follana assured me that I had 1 season to do my test in Paris. If I could handle the pressure, then I will be the starting shooting guard of the team for the next 5 seasons, if I can not handle it he will have to try to ship me away.

CL: And you think you can handle it? You will have players like Heiko VanBrandt, Jay Vasquez or Al Lee next to you, it is going to be hard to show off.

SL: I have everything the Coach wants. I shoot well. I bang the boards. I know how to handle the calls, and I have already played for him, so I know I can do it.

CL: What is Texas target for this season? Has Coach Follana told you anything?

SL: Yeap he has. We are going for all of it. We want the best record in the division, in the conference and in the WBA. We want 2 or 3 all-stars, the MVP trophy and we want the title too. During the season we will see, but really we think we have the talent to win it all.

CL: Wow, that is quite a lot, do you really think teams like Andorra, Albacete or Budapest will sit there and watch you play?

SL: Last season we were quite lucky at times, but at the end Paris was not able to play big when they had too. I am here to help the team. With me Paris wins quite a lot of experience and Coach Follana told me that he feels the team will be more balanced. That I will bring more depth to the frontcourt that was our biggest weakness.

CL: Okay, I see, but what about Kelvin Boice? He played for 20 minutes each match at the SF and PF position and you haven't got any replacement for that…

SL: Coach Follana told me he felt Boice was not that important to the team. He brought quality minutes, but his price during FA was going to be too big to keep him. And his lack of ball control is not something the coach takes kindly.

CL: Now that we understand better the situation in the team, what about you? Have you found were to live,

SL: That was easy!! I found a very nice house at Gif sur Yvette. Really great house.

CL: Would you be so kind as to make a prediction for your division?

SL: Okay. I think that it is going to be like this, first to last: Paris, Andorra, Budapest, Albacete, Gabon, Frankfurt and London.

CL: Any surprises for you during FA?

SL: Yeah, a couple. The first one is the contract offert to Yury Vislany. I know he is one of the best PG out there, and that he is young and all that, but 13.4m$ a year? Not even Parker Mason has a contract that big!! And the contract of Dimateo? Wow, he will be quite happy if albacete confirms the contract. Then Franckfurt with 6m$ each year to Remy Jay is maybe the biggest gamble. It can pay a lot for the team, like it can be a lot of money thrown away if he does not work out in the WBA.

CL: Do you have a message you want to pass?

SL: Yeah. I am going to the Eiffel Tower. So have fun, and next time you come to Paris don't forget and come to see us playing!

CL: Thanks Mr Lio, we will follow you very closely.

Draft Review

So another draft concludes for the WBA. The league has indulged itself in another helping of young talent. As always I am on the scene to evaluate the incoming talent team by team and to sort out this years winners and losers in the draft.

Nebraska--This team has been extraordinarily busy this offseason. With their trades they were able to gain the #1 pick and draft a player that they felt was a can't miss prospect. That player is PG Jervan Timmons. Timmons is one of the best passers to come out in recent memory and he is also a very exceptional defender. He keeps good tabs on his passes and makes few mistakes with the ball. He isn't ever going to be a great scorer, but with Nebraska's offense they don't need him to be. In round 2 Nebraska picked up SG Ed Rhodes. Besides Mark Carr, Rhodes is probably the best scorer in the draft and he is also a solid rebounder for a SG and has smart fundamentals. He'll probably need to work on his shooting percentage to be a real WBA factor, but is a top prospect anyway. Later in the round Nebraska selected local college prospect Coby Getz. Getz is an interesting pick since he got little playing time in college and is a pretty unproven player, but there was little talent left in the draft at this point so Nebraska could take the gamble. With the next pick they nabbed SF Joe Torney who could turn out to be a nice player if he can learn to hit the boards harder. He's a bit weak as a SF, but he can certainly score and is a smart player.

Colorado--Colorado selected the best overall player in this draft at pick #2 in Mark Carr. Carr is an amazing defender who really uses his head and has an instinct for scoring. Few players ever enter the WBA so prepared to contribute immediately, but he is one of them for sure. The next pick for COL was PF Sam White. White is another great pick by Colorado. He can shoot the ball and is a solid rebounder. He may have been the best PF in the draft and is expected to contribute immediately. DeOntae Perez has some turnover problems, but with proper patience and training he could develop into a nice player. Center Dave Curico could have some problems adapting to the power game in the WBA. He has never been a very strong rebounder and he suffers with fouls and turnovers every once in a while.

Omaha--Omaha traded down two spots and still ended up getting the player they would have taken at #1. Davion Stahl is probably the best PG in this draft right now. He's ready to step in and contribute right away. Stahl has some great offensive skills and he is a gifted passer and defender. One problem he has is that at times he tries to get too inventive with his passes leading to some turnovers. This is something that he will have to work on to be an effective PG in the WBA. Also in the top 10 Omaha selected SF Scott Berger. Berger is a big time offensive threat, especially from long range. The rest of his game is well rounded, but he may struggle to adapt at first. He is not a very good rebounder at the SF position and may need to switch to SG. He will also likely have turnover problems in his first few seasons. Next up Omaha selected PF Raheem Qualls. Qualls is another offensive minded player that will help Omaha get things going. He's also a strong rebounder and brings a defensive presence to the floor. He'll have to watch his turnovers though. This may keep him out of some games early in his career.

Arkansas--This team selected DaRond Lyons with their top selection. It seems some people feel this was a reach, but Lyons was in the top 3 vote getters for GCBA Player of the Year and rightfully so. Lyons is a lot like Mark Carr in this draft, but is a little weaker at scoring and commits a few more turnovers. But he is a good offensive player that knows how to involve his teammates. He is an even better defender than Carr also. With their next pick they selected PF Norm Kohn. Kohn is a very rounded player which is good, but he really struggles to find his range at times. His shooting ability will probably plague him his entire career which will hurt this pick. In round 2 they picked up Tyrell Clay. This was an odd pick to me, but the draft talent was dwindling fast. Clay has some ability, but, like Kohn, he will struggle to adapt to the WBA talent level. I don't see him sticking around too long in this league. Teams just can't have this much patience these days. With their next pick they drafted Ryan Swick. Swick is a nice gamble here. He's one of the best shooters in the draft and will add a nice offensive punch to the bench this year. One thing you shouldn't count on from him though is a solid defensive effort. He focuses too much on scoring which causes some turnovers and he has been called a selfish player by some. Next they selected Center Rudy Wilson. Wilson is another good late pick. He's a project player,but he is a good rebounder and has a nice touch inside the lane. He's an average defender and needs some slight work on his fundamentals. With the last pick in the draft they selected PG Bruce Banks which is a nice surprise here. Banks is only an average passer as a PG, but he is a such a smart player and a quality locker room presence. I feel this guy will stick around a lot longer than most of this years second round picks.

Boston--This team had just one selection and they used it to take PG Luca McMillan. Luca has some issues with fouling and is not a very solid shooter, at times not being able to find his range. If Boston can get these things corrected they'll ave themselves a nice PG. If I could put money on it though, considering Boston's luck with drafting PG's, I'd say that McMillan is destined for a career as a back-up.

Mexico City--With their top selection this team selected SF/PF Chad Nolan. Nolan was a top vote getter for GCBA Player of the Year and his stats prove it. Nolan is one of the premier defenders in the draft and is also a top rebounder from the GCBA. He knows how to stay out of foul trouble, but at times makes bad decisions with his passes. He will also need to work on his shot selection and realize that at the next level he doesn't need to do all the scoring. In round 2 this team selected SF Jim Baker. Baker is a solid offensive minded player, but don't expect him to put up big numbers on defense. He is basically the exact opposite of their 1st round pick Chad Nolan, so maybe together they can be solid at the SF position.

Miami--This team shocked me by selecting Darryl Whittaker in the top 10. Whittaker kind of flew under the radar to me, but it's a nice pick. He's a good scorer and knows how to fight his way in for a strong rebound also. His game is all about being in the right positioning and he is good at it. He'll be a quality addition to this club. In round 2 Miami selected McKinley Polivick who has a great upside in his offense, but commits more turnovers than about any player in the draft. That's a hard stat to correct because it's ingrained in a player. He's only an average defender also, so I would be shocked if he sticks around too long.

Toronto--With their top selection this team picked up Geoffrey Caldwell. Caldwell is an extremely well rounded player which will help Toronto continue to improve. He will need to work on his shooting to be an effective on court force for them. Late in round 1 they selected Center Hans Bryson who is probably the best defender in the draft. Bryson's biggest downsides are his extreme problems with turnovers and his inability to outplay the big Centers in the WBA. I foresee this player possibly moving to PF in the future. In round 2 they selected SG/SF Pete Boyer. Boyer is also a victim of theft on several occasions which will probably be his ruin in the WBA also. Not to mention that his offense isn't that stellar.

Long Island--With pick #10 these guys stole themselves a great player in Brenden Dawson. He is a very exceptional offensive player. He doesn't foul at all which makes him an even better defender also. This guy might end up being a high contender for rookie of the year if they get him some playing time. Next they got another steal when they picked up Center George Faup. Faup was projected much higher, although this was a weak draft for Centers. Faup is going to be a project because he isn't a dominating offensive presence right now and he has some slight foul issues. He is a great defender though and the best rebounder in the draft. He will contribute immediately as a rookie and I expect him to have a long career in the WBA.

Gabon--Jarrod Roe was their top selection this draft. Roe is a solid defender and is a decent scorer. He isn't anything spectacular or flashy, but he just gets the job done. In round 2 they selected High School PG Andy Carter. Carter has his youth to his advantage, but his game has a lot of growth room. He needs to work on every area over the next couple years. If someone has patience with him and he can survive into his 20's in this league he may be an effective player eventually.

Texas--Texas selected Jesse Szcygiel with their top pick this year. Jesse is a nice prospect at SG especially if he can get his turnover problems under control. That is his major issue which will cause him to be an ineffective player in the WBA. Later in round 1 Texas also decided to go for broke with their selection of Kaniel Hobbs. Hobbs is a great pure shooter and is advanced for his age. He will struggle to adapt to the physical game of the WBA being so young though. He may be better suited to play SF. This would allow him to be an immediate impact player. At PF he is a project until he gains some rebounding ability.

London--London traded down to get their man. They were able to steal Chance Crowley late in round 1. Crowley is a smart player that slipped in this draft as some had him drafted in the top 5!! His downfall may be his shooting ability to start with. He is also not a strong defender. But give him a few seasons and he'll be ready to play some serious ball. Clyde Summers is another nice pick for a rebuilding London squad. He is a solid defender with a nice knowledge of the game. He will be able to contribute to this squad. They started off round 2 by drafting HS scoring phenom Garvin Wright. Wright's biggest problems early on will be his mental game. It's hard to be so young in the pros. Wright will struggle with turnovers and fouls for a few seasons. He will also need to focus on creating open shots for himself and being bold enough one on one against guys at his own talent level. This kid is an elite scorer though so watch out. Next up they selected PG/SG Bob Bodnar who is really suited best to play SG. He will have a lot of work to do to establish himself in the WBA. His shooting is suspect and he struggles with foul problems. Next they selected PG/SG Cole Smith. He has some pretty bad foul and turnover problems, but he is a heck of a passer. He is also a pretty talented player offensively. He will be able to contribute as long as he can learn to keep his mistakes in check. With their last pick they drafted Center Kent Croce. Croce is a defensive presence for sure, but his offense is very lax. In fact at times it is non-existent. Croce will probably struggle to stay in the WBA.
